Marmanet Retirement Village hosts vibrant community market in Kempton Park
Residents, visitors, and local businesses came together at Marmanet Retirement Village on September 27 for a lively community market filled with shopping, fun activities, and fundraising to support social events for seniors.
Kempton Park residents, business owners and customers came together on a chilly September 27 at Marmanet Retirement Village for a lively community market filled with fun, friendship and fundraising.
The market was organised by the village’s Entertainment Committee – Celeste Weber, Lorna van der Lith and Ann Hamer – to raise funds to help residents enjoy more social activities outside their units and spend quality time with neighbours.
The village’s hall and gardens were lined with around 70 stalls offering a wide variety of goods, from toys and home décor to clothing, food and handmade crafts, ensuring there was something for everyone, young and old alike.

Committee member Celeste Weber said the funds raised would go towards creating enjoyable events for residents.
“We raised funds for entertainment so we can get our elders out of their units to gather, have fun, dance, laugh, mingle and play games,” said Weber.
“People really came through with donations to make the event a success.”
Beyond shopping and food, the market fostered connection among visitors. Guests laughed, socialised and struck up new friendships while browsing the stalls.

“I loved the variety, from food and toys to creative décor and even pamphlets about health and wellness. My children enjoyed the pony rides, and we bought quite a few things because we wanted to support the market.”
Several community members and organisations contributed to the day’s success. AfriForum donated 80 portions of potjie kos, while the Voortrekkers organised games for children. Fanie Oosthuisen provided live music, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Stallholder Gwen Reynolds, a Marmanet resident and owner of Paisley Creatives, showcased her love for Christmas with a stall brimming with festive decorations.
“I’ve lived in Marmanet for years,” said Reynolds.
“I’m retired now, but I’ve always loved creating things. I’ve done décor for weddings, 21sts and Christmas events. I’m a Christmas-crazy person, and I never miss our creative classes here.”
Marmanet Retirement Village extended heartfelt thanks to AfriForum, the Voortrekkers, Fanie Oosthuisen and Sarie Scheepers for their generous contributions and assistance in making the market a success.
