SPARK Kempton Park celebrates heritage with culture and colour

Learners, parents and staff came together for a vibrant Heritage Day filled with traditional dress, performances and cultural displays.

SPARK Kempton Park brought colour, music and pride to its campus when it hosted a Heritage Day celebration on September 23.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from scholars across all grades, dedicated staff members and supportive parents who helped make the day memorable.

The celebration embraced South Africa’s theme of “unity in diversity”, giving scholars the opportunity to perform, teach and learn about different cultures.

Each grade represented a specific culture, bringing it to life through traditional dress, performances and creative educational displays.

Festivities unfolded throughout the day across the school grounds.

The Sparks Fly area hosted vibrant cultural performances, classrooms were transformed into interactive cultural stalls for a gallery walk and a photo booth corner allowed parents to capture memories with their children dressed in traditional attire.

During the morning assembly, each grade performed on stage, with highlights including traditional dances, clan praises and storytelling.

Classrooms resembled a cultural marketplace, where scholar representatives welcomed visitors and shared insights about artefacts, foods and customs. Parents supported their children’s grades by contributing traditional items, dishes and cultural knowledge.

Assistant principal Sarah Mathe said the event was designed to be both educational and community-focused.

“The event was designed to celebrate Heritage Day in a way that is educational, interactive and community-driven, giving scholars pride in their identities while also learning to respect and appreciate other cultures,” said Mathe.

The celebration was hailed as a great success. Scholars gained confidence by performing in front of peers and parents, while the gallery walk encouraged curiosity and cultural appreciation. Parents expressed their gratitude for being part of such a meaningful day.

“Our Heritage Day celebration truly reflected SPARK Schools’ core values and was a proud showcase of our school community’s spirit,” Mathe added.

“Thank you to all the staff at SPARK Kempton Park who collaborated so effectively to ensure the smooth running of the programme.”
