Fourth place for SPARK Kempton Park in prestigious Matific Maths Olympiad

The school’s CAPS+ curriculum and tech-driven learning approach helped scholars excel, showcasing globally competitive results and a growing love for mathematics.

SPARK Kempton Park recently excelled at the Matific Maths Olympiad, securing fourth place out of 331 participating schools in the Southern African region.

According to Hilton Samuriwo, SPARK Kempton Park assistant principal, nearly 57 000 students completed over 1 372 600 activities and answered 6 863 000 questions during the Olympiad.

The five-day online competition is the largest of its kind globally, with millions of primary school students from over 20 countries participating.

“The competition aimed to create a love of maths and boost outcomes for scholars, while also providing actionable data and insight into learning gaps for teachers and educators,” said Samuriwo.

SPARK Schools follow the CAPS+ curriculum, which combines South Africa’s Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) with international benchmarks.

For mathematics, primary school scholars are taught using Scholastic’s PRIME curriculum, based on rigorous standards from Singapore, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

Additionally, SPARK Schools combine direct classroom instruction with technology-based learning. Data from each child’s progress is fed back to educators, allowing them to tailor their teaching to individual needs.

“This approach empowers our scholars to achieve globally competitive academic results,” Samuriwo said.

He added that achieving fourth place overall was a proud moment for the school:

“Your unwavering determination and tireless effort have yielded results, SPARK Kempton Park. Let us strive for even greater success in the coming year and beyond.”
