Thembisa trailblazer: Former taxi driver rises to financial manager at TELTA
From the taxi ranks to the finance office, Sizakele Manana’s journey shows how determination and mentorship can transform a career.
From taxi driver to financial manager, Sizakele Manana’s journey has been remarkable.
Manana, who was born and raised in Thembisa, spent 10 years working as a taxi driver before progressing into her current role as financial manager at the Tembisa Local Taxi Association (TELTA).
She attributes much of her success to her late father, Vusi Manana, who mentored her and taught her the basics of the industry.
He first taught her to drive using a Venture, and as her skills improved, she began transporting children in Thembisa.

She later entered the taxi industry formally and operated from the Swazzin Taxi Rank.
“It was not easy being a woman in the industry. I had to build my career and relationships with those who were already working at the rank.
“I had to step in and claim my lines daily, and eventually I was recognised by the people I worked with, which was a breakthrough for me,” she said.
One of her early challenges was gaining the trust of commuters.
“Some passengers did not want to be driven by a woman, but that never put me down. At the end of the day, they needed transport and they had to get it from me,” she said.

Because she grew up in a family rooted in the taxi business, Manana entered the industry with knowledge and a theoretical understanding; all she needed was the practical experience.
“All the strength I got from my father is what opened doors for me. It’s what I needed to succeed, as we all do when entering any industry.
“Being a female driver had its ups and downs, but it pushed me to work harder, and today our local association trusts me with its financial management.”
After many years on the road, she chose to upskill herself and approached TELTA for new opportunities.

She volunteered in the finance department before being officially appointed.
To young women who may fear entering the taxi industry but are passionate about it, Manana has a message of encouragement:
“I would tell them to grow a bold heart and join us.
“We are in an era where we want women to dominate industries they never thought they could enter. It is time for women to stop being afraid and pursue whatever they want. Dedication and hard work will reward them.”
