Faith groups join Kempton Park SAPS to pray for road safety

With hijackings on the rise, Kempton Park SAPS hosted a prayer event calling for protection for officers and road users.

The SAPS in Kempton Park, led by acting Station Commander Colonel Lesomo, held a prayer session on December 4 alongside members of the Faith Organisation, the Youth Desk and People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA).

The gathering took place within the Kempton Park policing precinct, focusing on prayers for the safety and protection of motorists travelling on the R21, R25, R23, M32 Pomona Road, and M41 Griffiths Road.

The theme of the session was: “We bind the spirit of hijackings that is bringing destruction, turmoil, trauma and murder to our policing precinct.”

“Kempton Park in the Ekurhuleni North District has been rocked by a spate of hijackings that has seen a surge in cases reported to police, with victims kidnapped and dropped off in other districts such as Mohlakeng in the West Rand.

“SAPS Kempton Park has warned motorists of an increase in hijackings, particularly at on- and off-ramps for the routes mentioned,” said Lieutenant Colonel Hlolani.

Hlolani added that it was important for motorists to be aware of which vehicles are considered high risk for hijackings. Popular targeted vehicles include Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan NP200, Toyota Hilux GD-6 and D-4D and Toyota Fortuner GD-6 and D-4D.

Colonel Lesomo urged leaders from faith-based organisations, the Youth Desk and POWA to continue praying for police officers, noting that they face a challenging and demanding task in the fight against crime.

“Praying for road safety must not be limited to this Prayer Day. We must normalise praying for police and road users continuously because our field of work is a risky one, and definitely not for the faint-hearted,” she said.
