Ward 91 councillor reflects on 2025 progress and challenges
McKenzie shares the ward’s 2026 priorities after a year marked by service improvements and unresolved infrastructure issues.
As 2025 draws to a close, Ward 91 Councillor Desmond McKenzie reflected on the challenges and achievements experienced by the community throughout the year.
“Even in 2025, our community continues to face significant challenges, despite ongoing efforts to address them,” McKenzie said, while noting several positive developments in the ward.
Among the successes, the appointment of a new waste contractor has improved services, with timely collections and efforts to curb illegal dumping, earning praise from residents.

The construction of a bridge connecting Frikkie and Malvina Street in Birchleigh has also enhanced pedestrian safety, particularly for school children.
However, McKenzie highlighted ongoing frustrations. The Roads Department has resurfaced several streets, but many remain unattended, and potholes continue to grow.
The Energy Department’s underperformance, particularly regarding streetlight repairs in Norkem and Birchleigh North, remains a safety concern.
By-laws enforcement is virtually non-existent, with illegal vendors operating freely, and the Parks and Land Use Departments have been unresponsive to resident complaints.

Billing and interim readings also remain a concern. On a positive note, the Water Department continues to deliver efficient and prompt services.
