Fatal truck crash on R21 South near Atlas Road leaves one dead
Preliminary information suggests a truck broke down and was being repaired when it was struck from behind by a second truck.
The CoE’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded to a fatal crash involving two heavy-duty trucks on the R21 South, near the Atlas Road off-ramp, late on January 15.
“At 21:21, the EMS dispatch received an emergency call reporting the collision. Firefighters from the Albertina Sisulu Corridor were immediately dispatched to the scene,” said spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald.
On arrival, emergency crews found two trucks involved in a high-impact collision.
“Preliminary information suggests the driver of one truck had suffered a mechanical breakdown and was trying to repair the vehicle when a second truck collided with it from behind.

“The individual working on the stationary truck sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene,” said MacDonald.

“The driver of the second truck was treated on-site for moderate injuries by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services before being transported to a hospital in Tembisa for further medical care.”
Rescue teams secured the scene to ensure the safety of other motorists. The body of the deceased was handed to the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services for removal.
The scene was later handed to the EMPD to investigate the cause of the accident.
