Thembisa-born mentor shaping football and community futures

From dancing competitions to Orlando Pirates trials, Lehlohonolo “Coach Nyonyo” Selepe has turned his Thembisa roots into a journey of performance, football, and community leadership.

My name is Lehlohonolo Selepe (38), better known as Coach Nyonyo. I was born and raised in Thembisa, in the Difateng section, and this township has been home to me my entire life.

One of my most memorable moments was in 2007, when we were selected as winners of the Thembisa Sibonise Majivane dancing competition.

I was chosen to be part of the IDA dancing crew, which opened many doors for me. That experience took me onto stages, television, and into music videos, moments that shaped my confidence and passion for performance.

Thembisa is full of surprises. It is a township rich with talent and an amazing lifestyle.

I believe that if you move with respect in everything you do, you will receive it back in the form of blessings. This is a place of hope, where dreams can grow if you stay focused and grounded.

As a community, I believe we must take care of our families and create healthy environments for one another.

By learning from each other’s lifestyles and working together, we can promote cleaner, safer spaces and build a healthier habitat for future generations.

A turning point in my life came in 2008, when I was selected for Orlando Pirates development trials at Mayfair Sports Grounds.

That experience sparked a deep interest in football and influenced the direction my life would take thereafter.

One of the challenges facing our community is the lack of strong, progressive leadership platforms.

If we continue relying on outdated leadership approaches, we risk creating problems for the future. We need leadership that understands the present and prepares for what lies ahead.

I draw inspiration from fellow coaches who are living out their dreams and passions. In many ways, I am also part of my own inspiration, because I continue to push myself to grow and do better.

If I had to describe Thembisa in three words, it would be: fun, challenging and productive.

Unity is powerful. When people come together with positive minds, real change can happen, and our environment and quality of life can improve.

One piece of advice that has stayed with me came from my Bible teacher, who once said: “Respect everyone, trust people, but never trust the devil inside them.” That wisdom has guided me through life.

Home is where the heart is, and Thembisa is the one place I will never forget. It is my homeland, and it will always be a part of who I am.
