Thembisa Youth Tourism Club promotes township heritage and youth empowerment
The Thembisa Youth Tourism Club aims to showcase heritage, culture, and entrepreneurship while attracting visitors to one of South Africa’s largest townships.
Thembisa, one of South Africa’s largest townships, is rich in cultural heritage, creativity, and untapped tourism potential.
To establish Thembisa as a vibrant tourism destination, the township’s youth aim to attract visitors, drive economic growth, and create job opportunities.
The Thembisa Youth Tourism Club is seeking strategic partnerships with the corporate sector to brand and develop township tourism as a credible, sustainable, and impactful sector that reflects the best of South Africa’s township life.

“The goal is to position Thembisa as a leading township tourism destination that promotes cultural pride, youth empowerment, and sustainable development.
“We want to create innovative tourism routes showcasing history, culture, food, art, and lifestyle.
“We also aim to empower local youth and entrepreneurs through training, exposure, and partnerships, while fostering collaboration with the corporate sector to promote township tourism as a shared brand for inclusive growth,” said Dondo Dithebe, co-ordinator at the Thembisa Tourism Association.
The association’s objectives include developing and marketing township tourism routes featuring heritage sites, cultural hubs, local cuisine, art, and music; creating branding opportunities for corporate partners to align with youth-led sustainable tourism; providing platforms for youth entrepreneurship in tourism, hospitality, and creative industries; and promoting Thembisa as a safe, inclusive, and authentic township tourism destination.
