The opening fixture also carried a sense of nostalgia, as South Africa once again faced Mexico in the tournament opener, recalling their memorable clash at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Fans arrived in large numbers to enjoy live entertainment, competitions and various activities organised throughout the evening before settling in to watch the match.

Football enthusiast Mahlodi Masingi said he believed South Africa faced a challenging task but remained confident in the team and coaching staff.

“To be honest, it is not going to be easy, especially against strong teams such as Mexico. However, we trust the coach and believe the team will work hard to show the country what they are capable of.

“He has been with many of these players throughout the qualification campaign and has selected a squad he believes can represent South Africa well on the world stage,” said Masingi.

“The World Cup is always difficult, but during the qualifying campaign, we proved that we can compete against strong nations. We should not underestimate ourselves.

“Players such as Mofokeng and Apollis have shown great quality, and I believe this team can surprise many people,” said Sephuma.

Although South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat in the opening match, supporters remained hopeful about the team’s chances in the remainder of the tournament.
