Kempton Park burger fundraiser helps support Allen Park residents

A burger special brought the Kempton Park community together while raising funds for residents of the Council for the Aged, Allen Park.

GRUBhouse Glen Balad partnered with Allen Park on July 7 for a Buy One Get One Free GRUBhouse Master Burger promotion, allowing residents to enjoy a meal while supporting a local cause.

According to Tarryn Shaw, Allen Park marketing and fundraising coordinator, the funds raised will assist the home in supporting its residents with essential needs.

“The Council for the Aged cares for around 518 residents through independent living, frail care, assisted living and life-right units. We provide meals, quality care and affordable housing to older persons,” said Shaw.

Shaw said the idea behind the partnership was to introduce the Kempton Park community and Allen Park residents to a restaurant experience she personally enjoys.

“My family and I enjoy the vibe, service and food that GRUBhouse offers, and I wanted the Kempton Park community and our residents who were able to attend to experience the same.

“It absolutely means the world to us at Allen Park. Sarah from GRUBhouse did not hesitate to be part of this initiative. She was excited and more than willing to help,” said Shaw.

She said the money raised would contribute towards meals, toiletries and other daily requirements for residents, many of whom are SASSA pensioners.

Shaw added that increasing costs continue to place pressure on the home.

“The rising economic costs make things incredibly difficult. Food and maintenance of the facility have become challenging as everything has become more expensive. We rely greatly on the community for assistance.”

She said transport remains another challenge

“Perhaps a means of transport to and from doctors and shops is something we urgently need to look at and raise funds for.”

Shaw thanked the community for its continued support over the years.

“The community has been a great support and continues to show their love by showing up and supporting us in many different ways. Thank you to our local schools, churches and individuals who help us care for those who once cared for us.”

She said the fundraiser created excitement among residents and visitors.

“I think the GRUBhouse fundraising initiative was something new, so residents were not quite sure what to expect, but there was a real buzz of excitement.”

Allen Park has several upcoming fundraising and community events planned, including a Dine and Done event at Bossa Glen Marais on July 30, a monthly dance at Allen Park on July 31, and a Women’s Day breakfast.

The home is currently seeking sponsors for goodie bags and community members interested in supporting these events.

Shaw thanked everyone who supported the GRUBhouse fundraiser.

She said partnerships such as this go beyond fundraising.

“We absolutely look forward to many more partnerships like this. It is not only about Allen Park, but about building long-lasting friendships and relationships with businesses and individuals around us. We are all here to help and support one another where we can.”
