The 15-year-old started drawing her comic book last March and did so just for fun.

When her mother, Desiree, saw her daughter’s work, she approached a publishing company to help publish Shaylee’s work.

According to Desiree, the book is being edited and should be complete by October or November.

“Shaylee was inspired by the manga books she reads.”

She said Shaylee’s dream is to be an animator or comic book artist, and she would love to go to Japan someday.
“We hope community members can help us raise funds on Shaylee’s BackaBuddy

(https://www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/shaylee-van-oostrom-5408573104611124594) account to help pay for the publishing,” said Desiree.

Shaylee told the Express she is excited about having her proudly South African comic book published.

She hopes it will be successful and aims to publish many comic books.

“I want to make a career of it. The funding will go toward more comic books and to further my studies after high school,” Shaylee explained.
