Turn off the aircon and help the less fortunate

I was disgusted to read the comments made by Shana Hobbs in her letter, “Barefoot child on hot tar shocks” (Kempton Express, February 20).
This is the kind of self-righteous middle class attitude towards the less fortunate that is not needed in this country.
There are parents trying as best they can to make a living and to put food on their tables and their children through school – shoes or no shoes, while Ms Hobbs sits on her air conditioned throne making untested accusations.
That woman you merely observed from afar (from the comfort of your air conditioned vehicle, which you had the audacity to mention while looking on at others suffering).
Who you claim an “unfit” mother could have been walking with a heavy conscience because she cannot make ends meet and provide everything her children need. This is the reality of South Africa.
If your concern is so great as to threaten action from the welfare then perhaps next time you should offer to help. Air conditioning is a luxury, a pair of shoes and some food is small change.
