Privilege, opportunity versus poverty

Privilege is a different matter and is sometimes not earned

MRS A FEY of Birchleigh North writes:

It is pleasing to note that my criticism of privilege and opportunity versus poverty has created some debate over the past few weeks.

It is refreshing to get a view of the true society in which we live and to learn to appreciate the fact that not everyone sees the world in the same way.

It is important that such issues are brought to the attention of the public, more so, in order for us all to evaluate our humanity towards those less fortunate.

While “working hard” to create opportunity is necessary and being proud of these efforts is justified, privilege is a different matter and is sometimes not earned.

It must be emphasised that poverty is not a choice people make and hard as many try, they unfortunately cannot break the cycle. While it is without a doubt a problem that South African society faces and much as it is government’s duty and mandate to care for everyone’s well being, it is our responsibility as citizens to help where we can or at the very least, not judge the less fortunate without taking the time to learn their story, which more often than not, will warm the coldest of hearts.
