It was really heartwarming to read, in the Kempton Express of July 23, the articles about all the projects that took place in celebration of Mandela Day.
Instead of reading about crime and corruption, we could feast our eyes on the goodness still left in mankind. There is, however, one question that crossed my mind when I read the article about the homeless people occupying the corner of Long Street and Monument Road.
I pass this particular site every morning on my way to work and find it heartbreaking to see these persons exposed to the elements and sleeping under cardboard boxes, plastic and heaps of old blankets.
But the fact of the matter is, that there are food businesses operating from the very same premises. One is a fish and chips business and a café and take away operates across the road. This morning I had the pleasure of seeing two men urinate in full view of traffic and pedestrians, not even attempting to turn their backs to the oncoming traffic.
Is this acceptable as far as health regulations are concerned? Not only the public urination but also the dirt and filth visible each morning in such close proximity to two businesses that serve food to the public?
Although I feel for these people and a lot of love is spread to see to their needs, a whole lot of diseases might also spread. Is there no other place where they can be accommodated?
