Taxis create havoc at Vlei Street

There are several locations in the area that pose a similar problem and the EMPD is aware of them

ANONYMOUS writes:

I know there have been some articles that I have read regarding taxi drivers making a mess on old Pretoria Road and Vlei Street.

When the metro cops are there waiting on the corner, the taxis start obeying the law. But when they are not there, all hell breaks loose.

I come home that way and have to wait for taxis that are going straight to beat the traffic in a compulsory turning lane. It is not just one or two taxis, it is many.

The cops have not been there for along time and I know being South Africa nothing will be done about it.

So why I have taken the time to complain about this, I actually don’t know.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, replies:

There are several locations in the area that pose a similar problem and the EMPD is aware of them.

These problematic locations are blitzed periodically, both during the morning and afternoon peaks periods. It is unfortunate that we cannot deploy officers at all of them simultaneously. It is more unfortunate that some irresponsible motorists will only observe the rules of the road when officers are in sight.

I would advise the concerned motorist not to despair as the EMPD is on a daily basis doing its utmost to curb this dangerous and deplorable behaviour on our roads. The book will be thrown at those witnessed committing such offences.

Our earnest plea is for all to observe the rules of the road, be considerate and patient during the peak periods. Conversely, metro police officers will, as always, definitely ensure no motorist commits any offence with impunity.
