Siblings are BMX champions
They both were novice riders until the end of December last year
A brother and sister from Glen Marais, Francois and Kaylin Smith, made big news at the recent BMX SA championships in Alrode.
Francois (12) came third in the final round of the 12 year old boys expert class and Kaylin (9) first in the girls 9-12 year expert class. They both belong to Kempton Park BMX Club.
According to their mother, Martie, both started with BMX racing in April last year at Kempton Park BMX Club.
They both were novice riders until the end of December last year and only started racing on expert level in January.
Both Francois and Kaylin inherited high cholesterol and hemochromatosis (high iron) and their physician advised that they needed to be super athletes. They both started BMX, a sport well known by their dad Francois, who also raced BMX and off road motorcycles when he was a youngster.
They both trained very hard this year, not only for their health but to get the achievement they have worked for seven days a week. They both ride for the Ayoba team at Kempton Park and are trained by Calvin Whittle.
When these two champions, both pupils at Laerskool Kruinsig, are not busy with homework and studies, they are on their bikes training or just riding for the fun of it.
“We as parents are blessed to have such amazing kids and wish them well for another BMX year in 2014,” Martie said.
