THE Rainbow Social Soccer League closed its 2013 soccer season by holding a six-team tournament, the Rainbow Summer Cup, at Avion Park on Sunday.
The league is made up of eight teams, comprising players from South African, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria and Congo. The majority of players are middle class professionals who enjoy and use social soccer as a medium of fostering interaction with locals and fellow immigrants.
Present at the tournament was ward councillor, Jaco Terblanche, who commended all the clubs for finding such an honourable way of interacting between the different nationalities, rather than violence or crime.
Kempton King Stars (KKS) kicked off the tournament by beating FC Ngoboyi 1-0. In the second play-off match, Miners FC lost by the same margin to Friends United FC.
KKS marched boldly into the final by whipping Berea FC 3-0, while Oceans FC humiliated their arch rivals, Friends United 4-1.
Prior to the final match, Terblanche presented the following awards:
Soccer star of the season – Martin (Oceans FC).
Best defender – Sactus (Friends United).
Young player of the year – Zandile (Ngoboyi FC).
Goalkeeper of the season – Ephraim (KKS).
Coach of the season – Ismael (Oceans FC).
Most committed team – Berea FC.
Most disciplined team –Miners FC.
The league also awarded a joint award to the secretary general, Innocent Mareya, and chairman of the Rainbow League, Benedict Mabenge, for their dedication in running the league.
The final match proved to be a one-sided affair with KKS being walloped 6-0 by the tournament favourites, Oceans FC.
The Rainbow League chairman then presented the Rainbow Summer Cup to the winners, Oceans FC, and the team burst into song and dance. The chairman also took the opportunity to formally announce the winners of the 2013 league, Friends United.
