India is tops at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships

Wrestlers from the 45 Commonwealth wrestling nations participated in the event

TEAM India was crowned the best team for all the events at this year’s Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, held at the Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre from last week Thursday until Saturday.

The team took home the trophies for men’s freestyle, ladies’ senior freestyle and senior men’s Greco-Roman.

The South Africa team fared well coming in at second place in both men’s freestyle and men’s Greco-Roman while the ladies’ team placed third.

The championships are a major feature on the international wrestling calendar and are sanctioned by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA).

Wrestlers from the 45 Commonwealth Wrestling Nations participated in the event with many of the teams featuring wrestlers that participated in the 2012 Olympic Games.

The results were as follows:

Freestyle: 50 – 55kg: 1. Sandeep Tamar (India), 2. Narender (India), Bokanga Masinyane (SA) and Carlo van Wyk (SA), 5. Ross McFareane (Scotland) and 6. Craig McDonald (Scotland).

55-60kg: 1. Jaideep (India), 2. Ravider Singh (India), 3. Sasha Madyarchlyk (England) and Marno Plaatjies (SA), 5. Gert Coetzee (SA) and 6. Gabriel Choueki (Canada).

60-66kg: 1. Amit Dhanter (India), 2. Terry van Rensburg (SA), 3. Arun Kumar (India) and Philip Roberts (England), 5. Pierre Botha (SA) and 6. Craig Miller (New Zealand).

66-74kg: 1. Paraveen Rana, 2. Jayden Lawrence (Australia), 3. Pradeep (India) and Gerald Meyer (SA), 5. Hanru Botha and 6. Chris Kinsella (Canada).

74-84kg: 1. Pawan Kumar (India), 2. Naresh Kumar (India), 3. Jasmit Phuka (Canada) and Jordan Steen (Canada), 5. Armando Hietbrink (SA) and 6. Kurt Herzog (SA).

84-96kg: 1. Satyvart Kadyan (India), 2. Justin van Zyl (SA), 3. Ali Al-Rekabi (Canada) and Hardeep (India), 5. Samuel Belkin (New Zealand) and 6. Tiaan van der Merwe (SA).

96-102kg: 1. Joginder Kumar (India), 2. Rohit Patel (India), 3. Adem Digovich (SA) and 4. Marcus Carney (Canada).

Ladies’ freestyle: 48kg: 1. Nirmalda Devi (India), 2. Oziti Sammy (Nigeria), 3. Preeti (India)/ Fiona Robertson (Scotland) and 5. Donna Robertson (Scotland).

51kg: 1. Adekuoroye Odunayo Nigeria), 2. Vinesh (India), 3. Mpho Madi (SA) and 4. Jeayne Clarson (Scotland).

55kg: 1. Pooja Dhanda (India), 2. Rekha Rani (India), 3. Makanjuola Bishola (Nigeria) and 4. Jeannie Coetser (SA).

59kg: 1. Adeniyi Aminat (Nigeria), 2. Geeta (India), 3. Tayla Ford (New Zealand), 4. Diyanshi (India) and 5. Gordon Norma (SA).
