Piketh to defend masters title

This year is her fifth masters tournament and since 2000 she received four gold, one silver and five bronze medals

KEMPTON Park bowler Colleen Piketh will defend her SA Masters title at the Warwick/Bowls SA Masters at the Wanderers Club from February 14-16.

World-class performances can be expected, according to Bowls SA president, Allan Freeman.

“They have won a clutch of gold medals internationally and are champions of Africa. Expect the best to play their best.”

Piketh (Johannesburg Bowling Association) will hope to retain her title in the open division.

This Norkem Park Primary school teacher represented South Africa in Glasgow, Scotland last year in the eight-nations Commonwealth Invitation Championships. In the pairs discipline she obtained a fifth place.

She was second in the singles discipline, losing to Natalie Melmore from England.

At last year’s masters she beat the defending champion, Louise Roediger.

This year is her fifth masters tournament and since 2000 she received four gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

Some of the highlights of her career as a singles player have been being the South African masters singles champion four times and being one of only three women who have won the Johannesburg Bowling Association district singles for three consecutive years (2010, 2011 and 2012).

Piketh has been in the sport for 19 years after she was introduced to it by her parents, Clive and Brenda Webb, who are avid bowls players. She joined Kempton Park Bowling Club and has competed in several competitions with her mother.

Entry is free, while parking, refreshments and meals will be available each day from 8.30am.
