Thomson claims 6/22 in premier’s victory
Kempton went about the chase in typically aggressive fashion and managed to chase the total down inside 15 overs with all 10 wickets still in the bank
KEMPTON Park Cricket’s Club’s premier XI travelled to a tricky Pollak Park on Sunday to face giant killers Springs Old Boys.
They have been the surprise package of the league this season already, beating CBC Old boys and running defending champions Benoni Northerns very close last week.
Skipper Johan Fourie won the toss and elected to bowl in very seamer friendly conditions. Kempton soon had the home side in trouble with the seamers doing early damage.
Opening bowler Robert Mutch bowled an impressive opening spell, claiming 1/9. The heart of Springs Old Boys’ batting line up was ripped out by a devastating spell of bowling by Easterns all rounder Grant Thomson, who claimed 6/22, helping KPCC dismiss the home side for a poultry 107.
Kempton went about the chase in typically aggressive fashion and managed to chase the total down inside 15 overs with all 10 wickets still in the bank. Openers Fourie (66*) and Wynand Hefer (36*) ensured that Kempton claimed a fourth bonus point victory on the trot. This leaves Kempton sitting pretty at the top of the table, seven points ahead of bitter rivals Benoni.
The promotion team took on CBC Old Boys at home on Sunday. Skipper Nick Moregamos won the toss and sent CBC in to bat in cool and overcast conditions. Within the first 10 overs it seemed like the move had backfired as CBC romped to 68 for no loss.
Howard Harnecki was introduced into the attack and made an immediate impact, claiming two wickets in his first over to put the brakes on the CBC charge. He ended with figures of 3/20 in seven overs.
Young left arm spinner Josef Wilken moved to the top of the wickets tally in the league with another disciplined and consistent ant performance, claiming 3/11 in 10 overs. CBC were eventually dismissed for 139 in 41 overs.
Kempton set about chasing down the target with an explosive innings by opener Jayson Gough, who was dismissed one run short of a long overdue half century.
His opening partner ,Zandr Muller, also contributed with a valuable 40 to see the side to the victory target inside 20 overs to ensure another bonus point victory.
The Saturday first side slumped to their first loss in the league in over five years with a very dismal performance at home against Benoni Northerns. Northerns batted first and posted a very daunting 209/7 in their allotted 35 overs.
Kempton replied in very ordinary fashion, slumping to 0/2 in the first over. Kempton were eventually dismissed for 179 in the 32nd over with Jacques Marais (49) and Brett Luck (41) the only two batsmen to show any resistance to a very well disciplined Benoni bowling attack.
