Eagle-eye Steyn wins Glacier Junior Series

He made two eagles in his opening nine holes

Modderfontein golfer Marco Steyn won the Glacier Junior Golf Series at Kempton Park Golf Club on Sunday.

He made two eagles in his opening nine holes and produced the lowest scoring of this year’s Glacier Junior Series on his way to victory in the Els Family Tournament.

Steyn signed for a six-under-par 66 to win the A division by three strokes and secure his place in the national finals of the country’s top junior golf series.

“I like this golf course and have played well here before. I knew if I just played my game I would have a good chance,” said Steyn, who has been building towards this kind of performance.

Earlier this year he beat some big names before losing in the semi-finals of the Sanlam SA Amateur Match Play Championship in Hermanus.

On Sunday, Steyn opened with a par and then chipped in for eagle on the second hole. He made another eagle on the eighth and went on to turn five under for the round.

“That early eagle got me off to a great start. It’s also the first time I’ve made two eagles in a single round. It gave me a lot of confidence going into the back nine,” he said.

He was one shot ahead of Paul Boshoff going into the back nine, and only two clear of favourite Keegan de Lange.

“I knew it was going to be a nice back nine. With them also playing well, it forced me to make some good birdies and pars on the back nine.”

His only bogey of the day came when he missed a three-footer for par on the 14th. But Steyn had already done enough to secure victory.

“I played well and managed to keep calm. I’m really happy with my performance. I was grouped with some really good golfers but I like that kind of challenge,” he said.

For the second time this season, another Modderfontein golfer, Karabo Mokoena, finished third in the A division. Mokoena also took third place in the Selwyn Nathan Tournament earlier this year.
