Fast and furious action

The action was fast, furious and high flying at Kempton Park BMX Club on Sunday with leg three of the Gauteng BMX time trial series hosted by Kempton Park BMX Club.

Riders from all over Gauteng arrived to pit themselves against the clock and set the fastest time around the newly refurbished track. Once the times had been set for each rider, a maximum of eight riders were grouped according to similar lap times and then raced each other over three motos.

A presentation was also held, acknowledging and congratulating the 20 riders from Gauteng who will be jetting off to Rotterdam in the Netherlands for the BMX world championships in July. These riders will all ride in official South African colours, from the youngest, Salvador Cronje (6), to the oldest, William Jackson (47).

This event was the precursor to the BMX national age group championships, leg three and four, which will be held at Kempton Park BMX Club on Saturday and Sunday.

Riders, parents and supporters from all over South Africa will take up residence in Kempton Park and light up the track with some fiercely competitive racing.

After the first two legs of this national series, which took place in KZN in April, the points tables are tight with multiple riders having the opportunity to be crowned the SA national age group champions.

BMX racing is a family intensive sport and extremely spectator friendly. Riders are normally classed by age and by novice or expert status, thus giving all a chance to race against similar age and ability. Safety is of paramount importance and as such you will see all the riders in full face helmets, gloves, long sleeve shirts and long pants.

Competitors start at very young ages with the strider classes looking after the two to five-year-olds and BMX racing having riders from five to 60 years old.

Gauteng has some very young riders actively racing BMX and a special example is young Tyler Posthumus, who started racing the full BMX track at three years old.

The club encourages all to come down the track on Anemoon Street, Glen Marais to witness the camaraderie and excitement that is BMX racing. The club will have food and drink on sale from the clubhouse on both days.

Action kicks off at 11am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday 6th. Contact club secretary, Sue Turck, on 071-675-2734 for more details.
