Rowan wins grand masters

The race was part of the canoeists' training programme

FLORIDA Lake Canoe Club hosted a 30km river race from Daleside near the R59 Heidelberg off-ramp, through Henley-on-Klip to finish in Meyerton, on July12.

The race was part of the canoeists’ training programme and to provide opportunities for new paddlers to gain the experience needed for A grade status in order to do major national events such as the Fish River Marathon or Dusi in due course.

Although the weather was superb for a winter highveld day with low water levels, some of the rapids had become quite shallow. Avoiding rocky ledges and other obstacles created some treacherously difficult situations.

Keith Beeston and his partner, John Rowan from Kempton Park, once again enjoyed their partnership and won the grand master age category in a time of two hours and 28 minutes, with no difficulties at any of the rapids.
