Local teacher selected for world champs
Geyer is grateful to all who contributed to making her dream come true
DR Mariet Geyer, a teacher at Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School, has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Lyon, France, from August 4 to 16.
She will be competing in the 5 000m, 10 000m, 8km cross country and 21,1km road race in her age category.
Her coach, Glen van der Westhuizen, has been training her for the past three years to participate in this prestigious event. Athletes are required to fund their own transport, accommodation and kit for the event.
Another local champion, Ludwick Mamabola (2012 Comrades winner), has contributed towards her fundraising drive. Further funds were raised through a French-themed women’s tea in June and other donations.
Geyer is grateful to all who contributed to making her dream of representing South Africa in an international competition come true.
