The Gauteng SAPS Provincial women’s soccer team has won the championship title of the SAPS FA that took place in the Eastern Cape recently.
Speaking to the team goalkeeper, who is from the Ivory Park SAPS, Constable Mavis Lebee Makaleng said they walked away with R20 000, a trophy and gold medals.
“It was a tough game but through team spirit and hard work, we made it,” she added.
Constable Makaleng said they played six games and won all of them.
“We managed to beat all the teams we played against. This is the first time the team has won gold since the inception of the games. I am thrilled with the success,” she said.
Kwa-Zulu Natal was the defending soccer champion for 10 years in consecutively.
The Gauteng SAPS Provincial ladies soccer team finished third at the SARPCCO games in 2015, which took place in Swaziland.
Constable Makaleng said out of the the two tournaments, she learnt that there are women who have a love for football.
“Ladies from the Congo showed their love for football and proved to understand the game during the international games. Next time we are taking them as a challenge. We have to scoop the international award as well,” she said.
When asked how she tackles her policing and soccer, Constable Makaleng said her work comes first and she practices football later.
“I practice with local ladies teams and I also use an indoor gym. We are aiming to work on our fitness so that we can challenge international women,” she added.
