The Hospital View Soccer Tournament that took place on September 24 and 25 was a successful celebration for Heritage Day and the development of local soccer talent.
Councillor for Ward 100, Clr Pieter Henning, said that the ward committee member for sports and recreation, Mr Michael Boshomane, came forward in 2014 with the idea of hosting a Heritage Day soccer tournament .
The committee agreed and approached one of the local players, Mr George Maluleka, and his family to endorse the event.
The tournament kicked off in Hospital View, Tembisa.
The teams were divided into three groups with four teams competing in each group.
With the support of Mr Maluleka, Clr Henning and Mr Kenny Mametja from the Ekurhuleni Sports Office, all of whom contributed various donations, the event was a success.
“Trophies and medals to all winners and runner-up teams were given. Thank you to Mr Maluleka as some of his sponsors donated full soccer kits to each of the winning teams,” said Clr Henning.
The winners of the tournament are as follows; U/15 New Generation team, U/17 Flamingo team and U/19 Tembisa Centre team.
Clr Henning thanked all the organisations that assisted with the planning and preparation of the field, as well as coach, Mr Daniel Matete, who kept an eye on the soccer pitch and watered it.
“We call on all residents to please respect the pitch if it is closed for watering and resting,” added Clr Henning.
