Local runs out for Western Force

Ryan has not only excelled in his rugby career but was fortunate to add to his family with a baby boy

RYAN Louwrens (24), a former Hoërskool Kempton Park pupil, is now a well known Western Force scrumhalf in the Super Rugby competition.

When Ryan was 16-years-old, he moved with his parents to Australia where he attended Churchlands Senior High School in Perth. In 2009, he returned to South Africa where he played in the Craven Week tournament and represented the Valke in the U/19 Currie Cup before he was offered a scholarship at the Western Province Rugby Institute (WPRI).

Ryan returned to rugby in 2011 after a suspension and received a second chance to play for the Cottesloe Rugby Club before rejoining the Western Australia Rugby Union (RugbyWA) Academy in 2011. He went on to play for the Force A team in 2012 and 2013, and played for the Western Force in their 2013 pre-season trial match against Tonga.

Ryan was also a member of Cottesloe’s grand final team in 2013. He signed an extended playing squad contract with the Western Force for the 2014 season and played for the Force in their pre-season trial matches against Samoa and the Pampas.

He also started in all three matches for the Force A team in the 2014 Pacific Rugby Cup, scoring a try against Junior Japan. Soon after, he incurred a knee injury in training which required an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction that ended his season.

In May, he made his Super Rugby debut for the Force off the bench against the Chiefs at Hamilton by scoring two tries in the team’s upset home win over the NSW Waratahs two weeks later at nib Stadium.

Ryan has not only excelled in his rugby career but was fortunate to add to his family with a baby boy, born an Australian citizen. He is also very excited to be earmarked to possibly play for the Wallabies in the near future.
