Genius FC secures win

Both teams pressed relentlessly from the first whistle, and it was Genius' reliable striker Thato Maleka, a former Kaizer Chiefs striker, who registered the team's first goal three minutes into the game.

The Tembisa Legends Soccer Development tournament game between Genius FC and Zamalek FC ended in a 3-2 win for Genius FC.

The game was played at the Hospital View Sports Grounds on Sunday.

Both teams pressed relentlessly from the first whistle, and it was Genius’ reliable striker Thato Maleka, a former Kaizer Chiefs striker, who registered the team’s first goal three minutes into the game.

Zamalek players, with likes of Jerry Skhosana, a former Orlando Pirates and Black Aces striker, attacked a lot. Despite a number of scoring opportunities, Zamalek players were unable to score.

With Genius in the lead, the game became more interesting and exciting as Zamalek’s Jerry Skhosana exerted more pressure, desperately trying for an equaliser.

His efforts paid off as he managed to finally secure a goal.

James “Small” Ngwako, who played as a reserve for Kaizer Chiefs, managed to score a second goal for Genius.

The first half ended with Genius F leading 2-1.

The second half saw Thato Maleka score a second goal for his team, bringing the score to 3-1.

A determined effort from Zamalek’s players allowed the team to score a second goal.

Unfortunately for Zamalek’s players, they were unable to score again and when the final whistle blew, the score reflected a 3-2 victory for Genius FC.

One of the organisers of the Tembisa Legends Soccer Development tournament, Mr Kenny Sithagu, said the pre-season tournament is part of promoting a healthy lifestyle for the football players in Tembisa.

“We are aiming to encourage youngsters to get involve in sports,” said Mr Sithagu.

The tournament kicked off on January 10 and the finals will be played at the Makhulong Stadium on January 31.

Mr Sithagu thanked the tournament’s sponsors, which included Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) and Thabile Trade, who made the pre-season tournament a success.

“We also thank the support provided by the community in Hospital View,” he said.
