Lucky Mtshali goes home with gold at Arwyp’s Night Race
Even in the rain, the race had a total of 1 200 athletes completing the challenge this year
OLIFANTSFONTEIN’S Lucky Mtshali was the grand winner of Arwyp’s annual Night Race on Wednesday night last week.
Mtshali finished his 15km race looking strong in 48:8.
In second place in the men’s open race was Retsepile Khotle of Benoni Harriers, who came in just a few seconds after the winner at 48:26. In third place for the men was Johannes Kekana (Cool Running) who completed his race in 49:49.

The women’s open race winner was Katy van Meter of Soul Striders, who finished her 15km in 1:2:10. Twin sisters, Cobie and Carol Smith (both of Team Vitality), finished in second and third place respectively. Kobie completed her race in 1:7:37, while sister Carol finished in 1:10:48.
The rest of the results for the men’s races were:
Third place winner of the 15km men’s race, Kekana, was also the winner of the men’s veterans category. Action Ramaboea of Ivory Park came second in 52:26.
In the men’s masters category, Piet Chauke of Gallopers came first in 1:03:24. Second was Ian Morshead of Boksburg (1:04:54).
John Woodnutt (Morningside) won the grand masters in 1:06:07 with Joos Massyn (BNAC) second (1:15:15).
Phiwenkosi Mokoena (Rockies) won the junior race (1:38), while Gift Linda of the same club made second place in 1:01:13.
Women’s races:
In the veterans category, Kashmira Parbhoo of Lenasia came in first (1:12:01) while Winnie Mbukwana of Striders was second (1:13:42).
Rita van Wyk from Boksburg won the masters race (1:15:06) and Ronelle Heyns from Roodepoort was second (1:21:33).
Grandmasters winner Patricia Shaw of BNAC ran her race in 1:32:22, while Sharon van Wyk of RFWL finished hers in 1:39 for second place.
Tanla Jacobs from Benoni High School won her junior race, completing her run in 1:42s.
This year, Laerskool Edleen walked away with a brand new computer after having the highest number of participants in the race. Maranatha School was second.
