Catching up with a former football star
"I quit professional football because I wanted to pursue business and build my own empire."
A former Bidvest Wits striker, Mr Sifiso ‘Jomo’ Vilakazi, was recently seen at Makhulong Stadium.
He teamed up with several of the Tembisa soccer legends to challenge Orlando Pirates players recently.
The Norkem Park-based Vilakazi was spotted showing off his football skills during the Tembisa Soccer Legend Development tournament.
Vilakazi (37), who is currently playing for the local team Abarondoli FC, called it quits in professional football while playing for Sivutsa Stars in 2013.
“I quit professional football because I wanted to pursue business and build my own empire. I played football for fun, I never knew I could end up being a soccer star,” said Vilakazi.
He said football helps him to relax his mind, keep fit and to stay healthy.
His talent in football was spotted while he was playing for a local team in Soweto called CWJ Killers FC.
He was scouted by Mr Themba Sithole for the Free State Stars FC.
Vilakazi started playing football at the age of 10.
He was born in the small town of Driefontein, Mpumalanga, and has also played for Ajax Cape Town and Amazulu during his time in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Vilakazi said education is the first tool to every success.
“Talent comes second. I encourage young people to study hard as our country needs better leaders who will takes us forward,” he said.
