Gogo’s football activity aids her health
She began playing football when she started suffering from the effects of high blood pressure.
Ms Nancy “Jomo” Mothiba is proud to have joined the local Tembisa Tsogang Basadi FC.
Ms Mothiba (56), who is known as Jomo on the sports-field, has been playing for the team since 2009.
She began playing football when she started suffering from the effects of high blood pressure.
“When I joined the club, I was taking pills for high blood pressure. My four years of playing football have paid off because I am not taking the pills anymore,” said Jomo.
A granny to several children, Jomo said she wakes up every morning to join her team at the Makhulong Sports Grounds for the two hour long training session.
“I believe it is the everyday training that helped me recover from the illness. I am not ashamed of playing football as a gogo. My condition really proved that soccer is everyone’s sport. Age does not matter, the language of football is the same all over the world,” said Jomo.
Jomo is encouraging other elderly residents and youngsters to consider sports.
“Sport has physically and emotionally empowered me in order to help me cope with the responsibilities I am faced with as a pillar of support at home,” said Jomo.
Jomo has also joined a 5km fun-run in Tembisa.
“I’ve been running since I was young, when I was at home in Venda. I am fascinated with sport and if I miss one training session, I do not feel good,” said Jomo.
Jomo, who used to play as a goalkeeper, is now holding the midfield position.
During her time as a ‘keeper, she saved the team in several games.
The Tembisa Tsogang Basadi FC trains from 6am to 8am every Monday to Friday morning at the Makhulong Sports Grounds.
