Golfers tee off for 2016 programme

This time around Tembisa will be looking to Mr Billy Selekane to come on board and assist them financially thereby reducing the financial burden of the trip on the club's financial coffers.

The Tembisa Golf Club will tee off its 2016 programme at Mafikeng’s Leopard Park Country Club in an upcoming three-day tournament.

This time around Tembisa will be looking to Mr Billy Selekane to come on board and assist them financially, thereby reducing the financial burden of the trip on the club’s coffers.

The club’s organising secretary, Mr Benjamin Monyanyedi, said Mr Selekane has always been an important partner for the club.

“We depend on sponsors and late last year when most corporates turned their backs on us, Mr Selekane, through his Billy Selekane Foundation, came on board and ensured we had a great closing tournament at Kempton Park Country Club,” he said.

“During the tournament funds were raised for schools that Billy himself supports as part of his efforts to plough back into the community of Tembisa. He believes this community played some role in the great person that he has become.

“We as a club are grateful to have him as one of our partners and there can never be a better time for Tembisa golfers as they head to Mafikeng to tackle the daunting Leopard Country Club,” said Mr Monyanyedi.

It will be Tembisa’s 21st trip to Mafikeng since the inauguration of the Easter Classic and this time around no fewer than 16 golfers will be taking part and carrying the club’s flag with dignity and pride.

The significance of this trip has always been that it sets the tone for the specific year’s programme, in this case 2016.

The Mafikeng event will be followed by the Club Championships.

Another event to follow Mafikeng, will be the much talked about challenge between Tembisa, Potchefstroom and Daveyton golfers.

Tembisa is currently the title holder of this challenge, having clobbered both Daveyton and Potchefstroom the last time out.

“We are hoping our golfers will be in better stead to compete effectively against our noisy Daveyton neighbours and the overspent old men from Merafong municipality. Once again we take this opportunity as the club’s executive to welcome all our golfers into 2016. Although it is already three months into the year, our real programme begins now, not forgetting all our other stakeholders that make it possible for us as a club to continue developing the sport of golf in our own Kasi,” said Mr Monyanyedi.
