Swimmer improves his national ranking
The dam water level was much lower than in previous years due to the drought conditions.
NICHOLAS Smith from Aquatic Academy was selected by Eastern Gauteng Aquatics (EGA) to compete in the SSA Open Water National Championships in Grabouw, Western Cape, at the beginning of March.
Nicholas met the tough criteria set by EGA and was one of only four swimmers selected to represent EGA at the nationals. There were swimmers from all over South Africa competing, including Chad Ho, an Olympic medalist.
The dam water level was much lower than in previous years due to the drought conditions. The water is different to Gauteng, with it being much darker and thicker.
Nicholas did really well, taking off almost a minute from his time and improved his ranking by three places. He finished in a time of 41:39.5 and is now ranked 16th overall in South Africa in his age group, 16-18 years.
