Group uses football to motivate youngsters
The games are aimed at removing the youth from the streets.
The Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) will host its second season senior soccer league games on April 3.
The games will rotate throughout the sports grounds around Midrand.
According to the association’s coordinator, Ms Makara Makarina Mokoena, the games are aimed at removing the youth from the street within disadvantaged communities.
“Soccer helps our youngsters to keep busy and avoid crime. It is our mandate as community members to help develop young people in the sports fraternity,” said Ms Mokoena.
The MLFA is registered under the South African Football Association (SAFA) to take part in any local tournaments hosted by SAFA.
“Our junior teams will be playing on April 2 and they will also play at various sports grounds throughout Midrand.
“During these tournaments, we invite professional coaches to come and help identify talent. The MLFA is looking at growing professional soccer stars. So far, we have four teams playing in a promotional league,” she said.
Ms Mokoena, a former player of Palace Super Falcons, said they advise young people to avoid gambling and to concentrate on their school work.
“As we sometimes visit our juniors at their homes, we help check their school work and reports. We are able to identify children from poor backgrounds who need support from the community.”
The MLFA was founded by Mr Bob Maredi, the late Mr Torch Mukwevho, Mr Makang Mathobela and Mr Benneth Mmotla.
