Pigeons really had to fly home

Looking at the weather for next week from Edenburg, it looks like the winds are going to be pretty much the same

THE Bloemfontein pigeon races 1 and 2 on Saturday were definitely the first proper races of the season.

The wind started off as a north-easterly in Bloemfontein, north in Kroonstad, 5 meters/second north-north west in Vanderbijl Park and a 6 meters/second in Kempton Park. The birds had to really fly home.

The margin between Riverpark Pigeon Racing Club’s first and second young birds was 4 minutes 1 second and it took 27 minutes 5 seconds to fill the top 30 positions.

The old birds’ margin between first and second place was 4 minutes 16 seconds and the top 30 positions were filled in 16 minutes 1 second – a lot tougher than the previous two races.

Looking at the weather for next week from Edenburg, it looks like the winds are going to be pretty much the same, so another tough one coming up for the pigeons.

The winner of the young bird race was Pine Pienaar and second place went to Holtzhausen Hokke (Riaan Holtzhausen).

Old bird race winner, with the same pigeon that won Winburg 2 and got a 3rd Gauteng Pigeon Union position, was Blackie Swart (also 6th, 9th, 12th), with Hilton Pitout in second place (also 16th, 21st).

The rest of the club results were:
