Pigeons come home in similar times

On Saturday the combined liberation with the other eight organisations will take place from Bloemfontein

THE Edenburg pigeon races at the weekend was the first race of the season that was not a combined liberation with the other pigeon organisations, with only the Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) birds being released from Edenburg.

There was very little or no wind from the start to the finish of the race to help or hinder the birds. Even though the release point was about 63km further than the Bloemfontein release point last week, Riverpark Pigeon Racing Club’s birds came home in similar times.

The winning margins between first and second place this weekend were young birds 48 seconds and old birds 13 seconds.

The top 30 positions in the young birds were filled in 18 minutes 57 seconds and the old birds only took nine minutes 30 seconds. The old birds’ nett flying time was quicker than that of the young birds with the young birds flying five hours 28 minutes and old birds five hours 22 minutes.

The winner of the young bird race was G & E Lofts (Graham Cheary and Elaine Russell, also 11th and 16th), with Hilton Pitout in second place (also 15th and 17th).

The old bird race was won by Blackie Swart (also 5th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 19th), followed by Pine Pienaar in second place (also 6th).
