GSS conquers Top 8 tournament

Giyane Super Stars (GSS) destroys teams in a top8 tournament.

Giyane Super Stars (GSS) emerged victorious in a Top 8 tournament at Winnie Mandela Sport Grounds.

Coach Jabulane Chauke said the entire tournament was a very tough one .

“We had a challenge because many of our players are employed full time. The team we have on Saturdays is usually short of key players,” said Chauke.

He said on Saturday Giyane Super Stars’ last game ended in a final score of 2-2 against the Red Devils.

“We had to postpone on penalties due the darkness and today we replayed the game. Our first game on Sunday was against the Red Devils and Giyane Super Stars won 1- 0,” said Chauke.

“In our second game played against Springbok FC, Giyane Super Stars won 1-0.”

He said their third game on Sunday was an emotional game because it was the second time Giyane Super Stars met opponents LBB FC.

“We beat them in the previous game and we had to do it again this week.”

Chauke said he did not make any substitutions in the first half of their third game.

“Themba Chauke scored our first leading goal 15 minutes into the game and when the whistle blew for the game’s break, the score was 1-0 in favour of Giyane Super Stars.”

In the second half of the game, the LBB FC scored their equalising goal and the 1-1 score led to a penalty shoot-out by the end of the game.

LBB FC lost 2-4 in the penalty shoot-out.

Giyane Super Stars chairman, Dr Tinyiko Mavasa, said it has never happened that a team played three games in succession in one day.

“With the diligence and commitment of the players and the management of the team we were able to achieve the impossible.

“We have reached our maximum potential of making Kasi soccer a social entertainment,” said Mavasa.

“GSS’ aim is to create opportunities and exposure to previously disadvantaged players. As a chairman of GSS, I feel we are close to achieving that.”
