Pigeon race delayed due to heavy mist
On Saturday there is no old bird race, only a normal young bird race and the Yearling National Race
THE Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) had to delay the liberation from Aliwal North on Saturday by four hours due to heavy mist.
Instead of the young birds being released at 7.15am and the old birds at 8am, the young birds were released at 11.15am and the old birds at 11.35am. This meant that the birds were flying through the heat of the afternoon and some fanciers initially thought the race might be an overnight one.
Riverpark Pigeon Club’s (RPC) clock strikeout time at the clubhouse was postponed from the usual 6pm to 7.15pm to ensure there were enough birds back before dark to fill the result sheets and also give club members time to arrive for the strikeout.
The club’s young bird race had a nett flying time of 5 hours 46 minutes and 52 seconds and the top 30 positions were filled in 26 minutes and 9 seconds.
The winning margin between first and second place in the young bird race was 3 minutes 56 seconds. Pieter van den Broeck had his first win of the season (also 8th and 12th) and in second place was Doves Nest Guest House (also 4th, 7th, 13th and 23rd).
The rest of the young bird results were:
Pine Pienaar 3rd and 25th; Tallies Loft 5th, 9th and 26th; Sky Lofts 6th and 20th; Hilton Pitout 10th, 18th and 27th; Holtzhausen Hokke 11th, 14th and 28th; G & E Lofts 15th, 19th and 30th; Reinhold Brichta 16th and 24th; Nollie de Villiers 17th and 22nd; Flip van Staden 21st and 29th.
With the old birds there was a nett flying time of 5 hours 42 minutes and 59 seconds with the top 30 positions being filled in 19 minutes 59 seconds, which shows that the old birds made up a bit of time against the young birds.
Hilton Pitout won his first old bird race (also 12th) by 2 minutes 13 seconds with Doves Nest Guest House in second place (also 9th).
The rest of the old bird results were:
Holtzhausen Hokke 3rd, 4th and 6th; Nollie de Villiers 5th and 13th; Reinhold Brichta 7th, 23rd, 25th, 26th and 29th; Knoesen Lofts 8th; Tallies Loft 10th, 22nd, 24th and 30th; Sky Lofts 11th; Blackie Swart 14th, 21st and 28th; Fred van Rensburg 15th and Pine Pienaar 16th and 18th.
On Saturday there is no old bird race, only a normal young bird race and the Yearling National Race, which will see the young birds for both races liberated at the same time from Colesberg, which is an average distance of 595km for Riverpark club members.
