Second overnight race of the season

On Saturday the birds will be released from Richmond in the Northern Cape

GAUTENG Pigeon Union liberated the pigeons for two races from Colesberg in the Easter Cape on Saturday, which is an average distance of 595km for Riverpark Pigeon Club members.

The winds were blowing strong south-easterly from the liberation point all the way towards Bloemfontein, which would have helped the birds with a relatively good flying velocity. Unfortunately, once the birds got to Bloemfontein, the winds had changed to be either north-westerly or north-north-westerly, which meant they were flying into a head-wind of 4-8 meters a second (14-28km/h).

Because of these strong head winds there were not enough birds home from the second race to strike-out, therefore the union hours of darkness came into effect and these middle distance races became overnight races.

In the first race it took 2 hours 25 minutes and 39 seconds to fill the top 30 positions on the result sheet. Blackie Swart of G & E Lofts (also 13th, 16th and 18th) recorded his seventh win of the season.

The rest of the results were:

Pieter van den Broeck 3rd, 10th and 24th; Holtzhausen Hokke 4th, 9th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 26th and 29th; Tallies Loft 5th and 15th; Doves Nest Guest House 6th, 11th, 12th, 23rd, 27th and 30th; Albert Neilson 7th, 14th and 20th; Reinhold Brichta 8th and 17th: Pine Pienaar 19th and Nollie de Villiers 28th.

The 30 positions on the result sheet for second race from Colesberg took 2 hours 40 minutes and 38 seconds to fill and for the third week in a row, Rheinhold Brichta (also 14th, 26th and 28th) was the winner by only 47 seconds from Holtzhausen Hokke (also 6th and 8th).
