Last middle distance race from Colesberg

Saturday sees the last two long distance races for the GPU’s 2016 season

PIGEONS were liberated from Colesberg in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, an average distance of 590km for Riverpark Pigeon Club (RPC) members, for the last middle distance race as well as the second last race of the season.

The birds for the first race were liberated at 6.15am and those for the second race at 6.45am with clear skies and a light south-westerly wind.

Some of the birds from the second race must have caught either a shift in the wind strength or direction as the majority of the clubs from Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) had some birds clocked from the second race before the first race.

The velocity of Riverpark’s winning bird from the first race was 1427.032 metres per minute (85.62km/h) compared to 1530.241 metres per minute (91.81km/h) in the second race.

The nett flying time in the first race for the winning bird for Riverpark was six hours 49 minutes 13 secs and the top 30 positions took 20 minutes 39 seconds to fill. With his first win for the 2016 season, Nollie de Villiers (also 6th) took first place by a winning margin of four minutes 12 seconds from Blackie Swart (also 4th, 9th and 15th). Nollie is currently 29th in the GPU on the unofficial results.

The rest of the results were:

Fred van Rensburg 3rd and 18th; Holtzhausen Hokke 5th, 12th, 13th and 26th; Pieter van den Broeck 7th, 11th and 17th; Doves Nest Guest House 8th, 16th, 23rd, 24th and 27th; Reinholdt Brichta 10th, 19th, 20th and 28th; Albert Neilson 14th; Pine Pienaar 21st and 25th; G and E Lofts 22nd, 29th and 30th;

The nett flying time for the winning bird in the second race was only six hours 27 minutes 44 seconds, but it took 41 minutes 22 seconds to fill the 30 positions on the result sheet. There was a winning margin of 11 minutes 50 seconds between first and second place and 11 minute 25 seconds between second and third position.

The winner of race 2, with six positions on the sheet, was Fred van Rensburg (also 9th, 11th, 26th, 27th and 28th), currently in third position on the unofficial GPU results. In second place was Pine Pienaar (also 20th), who is on eighth position on the unofficial GPU results.

The rest of the results were:

Blackie Swart 3rd, 7th, 14th, 15th, 21st and 30th; Doves Nest Guest House 4th, 10th, 12th and 16th; Reinholdt Brichta 5th, 13th and 25th; Sky Lofts 6th and 17th; Holtzhausen Hokke 8th, 23rd and 24th; Pieter van den Broeck 18th and 29th; Nollie de Villiers 19th and 22nd.

Subject to final confirmation on Thursday, Riverpark’s middle distance champ in the single bird averages (points scored from only the first bird clocked in the middle distance races) is Blackie Swart, with only a three-point margin from Holtzhausen Hokke (Riaan Holtzhausen).

The all bird averages (all birds that scored in the top 30 positions) was also won by Blackie Swart with Doves Nest Guest House (Gawie Botha) in second position.

Saturday sees the last two long distance races for the GPU’s 2016 season. These races are from Three Sisters and Beaufort West in the Western Cape, about 809km and 878km respectively for Riverpark members.
