Swart is Riverpark club champion

The last races of the season took place on Saturday

ON Saturday, for the last races of the 2016 season, the Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) pigeons were liberated from Three Sisters and Beaufort West in the Western Cape.

These race points are an average distance of 809km and 879km respectively for Riverpark Pigeon Club (RPC) members.

According to the GPU representatives at the liberation points there was no wind with clear skies at both liberation points and the birds for both races were liberated at 6.15am. The winds for the rest of the race showed south west and southerly winds which made sure there were birds at their lofts from both races before sundown on Saturday.

The Three Sister race took 35 minutes 14 seconds to fill the top 30 positions on the result sheet at RPC. The winning bird had a nett flying time of 9 hours 17 minutes and 51 seconds, which is equivalent to 87.83km/h. The result sheet took 35 minutes and 14 seconds to be filled – not bad for such a long distance race.

The RPC results had Blackie Swart (also 14th, 24th) winning by one minute 14 seconds from Albert Neilson (also 7th, 16th and 28th), with the rest of results being:

Holtzhausen Hokke 3rd, 15th and 26th; Sky Lofts 4th, 9th, 23rd and 27th; Nollie de Villiers 5th; Reinholdt Brichta 6th, 18th and 19th; Pine Pienaar 8th; Doves Nest Guest House 10th, 13th, 17th and 30th; G & E Lofts 11th, 21st, 22nd and 29th; Connie Coertse 12th and 25th and Pieter van den Broeck 20th.

The Beaufort West race had the winning bird flying for 9 hours 17minutes and 51 seconds which meant the pigeon flew at an average speed of 91.38km/h, a faster race speed than the Three Sisters birds.

The top 30 positions on the result sheet took 53 minutes 41 seconds to fill as the winning margin was 10 minutes 19 seconds between first and second place. The winner at RPC was Nollie de Villiers (also 8th, 28th and 30th), followed by Pine Pienaar (also 17th).

The rest of the results were:

Connie Coertse 3rd and 20th; Albert Neilson 4th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 16th and 23rd; Reinhold Brichta 5th, 7th, 9th and 27th; Blackie Swart 6th and 10th; Pieter van den Broeck 13th, 15th, 22nd and 24th; Holtzhausen Hokke 18thand 19th; Fred van Rensburg 21st; Doves Nest Guest House 25th and G & E Lofts 26th.
