Soccer tournament aims to keep youngsters busy
The soccer tournament will kick-off on November 26 and the final games will be played on December 11.
Pick n Pay Swazi Inn will be hosting a soccer tournament for the community of Ivory Park, Tembisa and the surrounding areas.
According to the public relations officer of Pick n Pay Swazi Inn, Mr Tom Makhura, the objective of the tournament is to remove children from the street and keep the youth distracted from illegal activities.
“The festive season is around the corner and crime rises drastically in the communities. With this type of tournament, we expect young people to respond well, in order to keep their minds busy and to refrain from crime, drugs and unforeseen challenges,” said Mr Makhura.
The soccer tournament will kick-off on November 26 and the final games will be played on December 11.
All the games will be played at the Mahlangu Sports Grounds in Ivory Park, Extension 7, behind the Pick n Pay.
The football divisions expected to take part in the tournament include the U/15s and senior clubs.
Registrations for the tournament are open and interested clubs are encouraged to affiliate before the set due date.
Affiliation for the U/15 is R300 and seniors is R 1 500.
“There will be prizes to be won in the tournament. The U/15 category winners will walk away with R1 000, soccer kit and medals. The runner-up will walk away with R600, soccer kit and medals. The senior winners will go home with R14 000, soccer kit and medals,” said Mr Makhura.
Mr Makhura said they are appealing to Ivory Park and Tembisa residents to take advantage of the tournament.
“We urge parents to come watch the games in support of their children. Again, we are hoping that Ivory Park builds a stable soccer team in order to grow the area,” said Mr Makhura.
