Tembisa Golf Club shines

The final Interclub competition of 2016 took place at the South Downs Golf Club, just outside Soweto.

The final Interclub competition of 2016 took place at the South Downs Golf Club, just outside Soweto.
Three teams, including the Tembisa Golf Club, Merafong and Soweto’s Club 9, were due to take part in this final showdown.
Merafong pulled out.
It was then left to Tembisa and Club 9, the powerhouses of the 2016 calendar year, to battle it out.
Tembisa had recently defeated Club 9 so before the start of the shootout on Sunday it was 1-1, with Club 9 having beaten Tembisa at South Downs and then going on to lose to Tembisa at the Kempton Park Country Club.
Club 9 boasts some of the most formidable players in Thabiso Dijoe and his playing partners, with Tembisa also bragging with the likes of Joe Makati, Themba Mazibuko, Francis Tsotetsi and other great strikers of the ball like Aubrey Molefe to mention just a few.
Tembisa had it tough during the first nine holes when it appeared like the lads from Soweto, led by their evergreen stalwart Thabiso Dijoe, were going to be the winners on the day.
Mporo Mathiyase of Umthambeka Section and partner Kakapa Sibandze turned on the heat during the final nine holes, knocking in birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes, thereby turning the fortunes of Tembisa as Michael Lekhothoane and Jerry Mosia continued their onslaught on the Club 9 opponents and finally winning 2 and 1 by the 17th hole.
Mthembu and Victor sealed the deal for Tembisa as Victor produced a sterling chip from an awkward under the tree angle with Mthembu then knocking the putt in to win it for Tembisa.
“Yes, the great Makati and Mazibuko were clobbered by Thabiso and his partner of Club 9, however the job had already been completed as 3 out 5 partnerships had already won their matches.
“It was quite pleasing and refreshing to win at South Downs, away from home, and beating a great team from Soweto. Inter-club competitions are done for this year, the next major event will be The Josiah Selekane Golf Challenge in December, an event hosted to honour one of the early members of the club if not one of the founding members, father to Mr Billy Selekane who’s house was used as a parting depot by the club back in the 70s and the 80s. We are proud to be associated with this event but also feel honoured to have Mr Selekane himself hosting this event with us, whereby funds are raised to donate to schools and charities of Billy’s choice,” said the Tembisa Golf Club organising secretary Mr Benjamin Monyanyedi.
