Good rains bid well for Dusi training

The top three finishers finished the tough race in times of 2:02

WITH the FNB Dusi river race scheduled for mid-February from Pietermaritzburg to Durban through the Valley of 1000 Hills, paddlers are enjoying the specific river races being hosted to accommodate their training.

With river levels rising thanks to great rainfall, and with the Vaal Barrage below the Vaal Dam releasing superb amounts of water, the race on January 14 was fast, exciting and exhilirating.

Starting at the Smilin’ Thru River holiday resort 7km upwater from Parys, with a 3km portage around the weir on the entry to Parys, plus some 20km through the town to Hadeda Creek, with highly technical enjoyable rocky rapids similar to those found on the Umsindusi River, the race was perfect for the training paddlers.

The top three finishers finished the tough race in times of 2:02.

Dale Felton with Nicholas Gunning from Kempton Park enjoyed their hardworking event maintaining smiles and good cheer all through, despite it being some years since Felton tackled such a tough canoe race, while it is Gunning’s first attempt to do the FNB Dusi.
