Maplankeng wins on penalties

From the first whistle, both the teams were enthusiastic and wanted to take home the victory.

Sunday saw Maplankeng FC facing Winnie Masters FC in a competitive final match of the Winnie Mandela Top 8 Soccer Tournament for Old Crocks.

The two teams met at the Winnie Mandela Zone 6 Sports Ground.

From the first whistle, both the teams were enthusiastic and wanted to take home the victory.

However they missed numerous chances at goal in both halves of the match.

During the match, disgruntled Maplakeng FC players and supporters had altercations with the referee as they did not agree with a number of his decisions.

The game ended in a fruitless 0-0 draw at the end of the 70 minutes and had to be decided on penalties, which Maplankeng FC won 4-2.

The goalkeeper of Maplankeng FC, China Mashishi, secured his team’s success by preventing any opposition players from scoring.

Meanwhile, Maplankeng FC coach Ronny Mothapo said the tournament was tough and they had to capitalise on their opponents’ mistakes to win the finals.

“I found it impressive at how my players kept their momentum and showed that their soccer spirit was not destroyed by the festive season.

“I found them ready and eager to win. This is just the beginning of the year and I am hoping we will continue to keep our title as the Winnie Mandela Old Crocks champions,” said Mothapo.

One of the tournament’s organisers, Mr Ricky Mokgalaka, said they are looking forward to hosting disciplined teams throughout the year and serving supporters with great matches.

“These games are meant to entertain our fellow citizens and to keep players fit and healthy,” said Mr Mokgalaka.
