The Ward 07 Football Club won the Top 8 Soccer Tournament over the weekend.
The team’s captain, Lesedi Mafodi, said the win comes after three consecutive loses in the previous tournaments.
He said the two-day tournament was delayed due to a replay that resulted from Saturday’s game that was postponed due to darkness.
“Today we had to play three games without getting enough rest. In yesterday’s game we drew 1-1 and couldn’t go to a penalty shoot out as it was dark. The game had to be called off”.
Mr Mafodi said on Sunday they were faced with the same fate as their last game started late and it was dark already.
He said in their first game (Saturday) there was a challenge because some of his players arrived late as they live far away.
“Our first game was tough because Ward 07 FC’s opponents were owning the game. The opponents scored in the first half and we were struggling to get a goal.”
“During half-time our coach pointed out our mistakes and we managed to fix them and rearranged ourselves according to the coach’s instructions,” said Mr Mafodi.
He said in the second half Ward 07 FC scored an equalising goal. The score was locked at 1-1 before the match had to be called off due to bad light.
He said in Ward 07 FC’s first game on Sunday, the opponents lacked determination and were not hungry for a goal.
“Due to the intensity of the game the match ended with a score of 0-0. We won 6-5 on penalties.
“The semi-finals were too easy and Ward 07 FC won 3-1,” said Mr Mafodi.
He said in the final game Ward 07 FC players were tired.
“In the entire game, ball possession was not on our side. We were therefore defensive and didn’t want to let the opponents score a goal.”
The final game finished with a score of 0-0 and the teams went to a penalty shootout.
The final score of the match was 4-3 in favour of Ward 07 FC.
