Du Plessis to defend his title at EFC at Carnival City

Du Plessis captured the ‘cursed’ welterweight strap in 2016

SOUTH Africa’s Dricus du Plessis will defend his welterweight championship title during EFC 59 at Carnival City on May 13.

Du Plessis will defend his title against Ireland’s Henry Fadipe and, after months of anticipation, the question of who will remain the king of the division will be answered.

Du Plessis captured the ‘cursed’ welterweight strap in 2016 and was scheduled to defend it against the Irishman later that year, but the challenger succumbed to injury.

Instead of waiting and in an attempt to become the best pound-for-pound athlete in the organisation, the champion opted to go up a division and went on to successfully compete at middleweight.

Many were offered the chance to fight him but they all declined, and after a year-long break from competition, Fadipe eventually returned to the hexagon. He came back to meet the only man, besides the champion, who was willing to face him and after an overwhelming victory it was clear – the Irishman was better than ever and he still had nowhere left to go but for gold.
