Kempton first rugby team equals 1989 record

Several club finals to be played at Barnard Stadium on Saturday

THE Edleen Spar Kempton first rugby team equalled a 1989 record going into the final unbeaten in the league matches after defeating Vaal University of Technology 59-5 in the semi-final of the Merlin League on July 29.

Sala Edwards, an honorary club member, confirmed the last time Kempton Rugby Club’s first team was unbeaten was in the then President’s League in 1989, so this team has the chance to better the record going into the final against Nigel on August 12.

“This season the team has put in a solid performance with an excellent commitment by the players, team and coaching staff, which has enabled them to reach this goal,” says head coach André Hartley.

The points scorers against VUT were:

Tries: Ferdi Erasmus, Zach van Loggerenberg, Dwaine Els (2), Jacques de Jager, Emwee du Toit, Francois Wolwaard, Janu du Toit, Jaco Kritzinger.

Conversions: André Smith (7).

“We would like to thank our sponsors, Edleen Spar, BBL, Battery Fitment Centre, Engen and Atlas BX Automotive Batteries.”

Kempton Rugby Club appeals to every single golden oldie, school player, all the old players, coaches and the community to get behind both teams on August 12.

The u-21 side will play in the final of the Merlin League against Sasolburg at noon on the B field and the Edleen Spar first team at 2pm on the A field.
