Entries open for the Tembisa Mile and 10km race

The total prize purse for the race is R80 000

THE 2017 edition of the Tembisa Mile will take place on October 29.

The race comprises a 10km and one-mile road race. The event will start and finish at Moses Molelekwa Arts Centre next to Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.

The 10km race will start at 7am.

Entries are open online at www.tembisamile.co.za. The 10km is limited to 1 000 participants or entries and the mile is limited to 500 runners.

The entry fee for the 10km is R80 for licensed runners and R100 for unlicensed runners. The 10km is open to every person 14 years and older.

The entry fee for the mile race/walk, junior mile (16-19 years) is R30 for licensed athletes and R40 for unlicensed athletes. The boys and girls u-15 mile is R30.

A timing chip will be attached to the race bib/number to be worn on the front of the athlete’s shirt or vest.

The total prize purse for the race is R80 000. The winners (first man and first woman) in the 10km and the mile will each take home R5 000. Record incentives will be given to the first athletes to better the existing course records in both the 10km and the mile.

10km course records:

Men: Namakoe Nkhasi of Lesotho: 29:26 in 2015

Women: Rutendo Nyahora of Zimbabwe: 34:51in 2015

Mile course records:

Men: Jery Motsau: 4 minutes 6 seconds (2016)

Women: Lebogang Phalula: 4 minutes 44 seconds

All race finishers will get medals and SPAR goodie bags.

The 2016 10km defending champions Namakoe Nkhasi of Lesotho and Liziwe Mabona from Soweto will run to defend their titles.

The women’s course record holder and 2015 champion Rutendo Nyahora of Nedbank Running Club (Zimbabwe) has confirmed her participation in the 10km event. The in form SA 10km and 4km cross country champion Glenrose Xaba will return to Tembisa after finishing third in the 10km last year.

Race number collection and late registration will take place on October 28 at the race venue from 9am to 6pm and on the morning of the race from 5am to 7.50am. The race is being sponsored by Tomtom South Africa, Department of Sports and Recreation Ekurhuleni, SPAR North Rand, M&M Marketing, FUTURELIFE, Brooks, aQuelle and AmaSipSipSA.
